Instrumental lessons -
We can teach and can arrange for tuition of a large number of musical instruments ranging from drums to guitars and piano to trumpet, we also offer vocal coaching. All our tutors are highly trained in thier various instruments and have a wealth of teaching experience. Please contact us for more info.

This workshop focuses on lyric writing and delivery skills. Guidance and practical assistance is given throughout the workshop (young people with reading or writing difficulties will be assisted). Once the song is written participants record over a backing track to produce a CD they can take away with them.

Yard 1 studios is very much a community based studio and as such supports the community and the young people who live in it. We offer a range of workshops, from 1 to 1 sessions to whole groups, young or old and with varying abilities! These workshops are frequently used by youth groups, schools and other educational facilities. All workshops can contribute towards qualifications such as AQAs which we can acredit here at Yard 1, ASDANs and D of E awards. We can also bring our workshops and expertise to you. All our staff are professionals, we do what we tutor for a living so can give a real insight into how things are done in the industry.

As a school for students displaying extreme behaviours because of Social, Emotional and or Behavioural difficulties (BESD) we offer our students individualised timetables. This allows us to meet their needs, and hopefully give them the best possible start in adult life. We work in partnership with local providers, however sadly some providers can not engage our students because of the complexity of need. Yard 1 has been a great partner and the approach Tom and his team take when working with our students is exemplary. They engage, challenge and stimulate our students. It is a provision that Marland School will buy into for the foreseeable future.
The staff are happy to work with both groups or individuals and take an approach that is person centred and follows the Every Child matters Agenda. I will certainly be continuing my work with Tom and his team in the future.

The Youth Offending service have been using Yard 1 for a number of years now and we have always found it be a professional set up which is highly praised by my staff and the young people we send to you. Only last week one of our clients commented in a meeting that his two sessions with you were not only the best thing he did on his order but ranked as one of the best things he'd done in his life. Many of them would identify these activities as part of their culture but have little or no way of participating in them at the moment, particularly those who are excluded from education or whom live on the most deprived estates in Bideford and Barnstaple. I therefore wish you all the best in your endeavours and look forward to working with you again in the future.

At YISP (Youth Inclusion Support Programme) we regularly use the services of Yard 1. As combinations of elements such as music and lyric are a great aid to learning and memory development.
A lot of the young people we work with have experienced a sense of failure in mainstream education particularly in the area of literacy. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy or a wariness of exploring their emotional intelligence. Yard 1 gives them a space to do this in a creative way. The processes used cause them to reflect on their lives, their values and the type of person they aspire to be. It can also be a safe place to vent frustrations and perceived injustices in their lives through the writing of lyrics for the music they produce. I believe they feel listened to in Medias they can enjoy and relate to and respond well to the respect they are shown there by all the workers.

I found yard 1 to be responsive and responsible delivering creative workshops that challenged the participants in such a way as to develop their skills and enable them to experiment. Your team are clearly more than proficient in the technology and this is partnered by a professional, friendly approach. I really appreciated that fact that you 'got' the whole event and could see the match with your own aims too. I would be delighted to work with Yard 1 again in the future should the right opportunity arise.

'Tom was extremely helpful when it came to organising our day. Nothing was too much trouble. He spent time listening to what we needed and organised an unforgettable experience for twenty of our pupils. We arrived early on a frosty Saturday morning. Everything was already set up inside. Kids starting working straight away on their lyrics and musical arrangement. Most of them had never been in a music studio and they were amazed. They loved finding out about the cutting edge equipment. Their favourite bit was being able to sample their own sounds! Also, we wanted to integrate French and German in the lyrics. The staff just took the foreign language theme and rolled with it. The brilliant CD we were given at the end of the session will remind us of the day for years to come!'
